Beyond Fistula

has both parents, was raped by a family member 2 yrs ago leading to internal damage/fistula. She is not safe at home and is being raised by the women in the Beyond Fistula program as her mother doesn't feel she can be kept safe at home.

Siantayo is a teenaged girl in Kenya. She has a mother, a father, and eight siblings - four girls and four boys. Siantayo was born with a fistula and has had many surgeries to try to correct it. Now she has a colostomy to manage. She likes studying and feels blessed to have support in her education.

Kelvin is a young student whose father has abandoned him, his brother, and his mother. She had an obstetric fistula from giving birth that made it very difficult for her to work. Kelvin is close with his grandparents but his mother struggles to keep the family housed and there are days they only have one meal. He wants to succeed in school along with his brother.

Juliet was born the second of eight siblings. She dreamed of being a doctor until, at age 13, she became pregnant. She carried her baby to term, suffering injuries during the birth. She learned of a clinic in Eldoret that could help her. There, she found the medical help she needed and she was able to imagine going back to school. She continues to dream of becoming a doctor. Her parents are now caring for her child to allow Juliet to study. She has eagerly returned to school this year at the Pratrician School.

Nivea is fifteen years old from Uganda. Both her parents have low income. She comes from a family of nine children whereby she's the first born.She has both grandparents living. She got fistula when she was fourteen years old and stayed with it for one year before getting treatment. She's dry now. She is willing to learn, and she will like to become a nurse when she grows up. She likes playing football.

Despite many hardships in her young life, Quinter has been steadfast in continuing her education. At age 13, she became pregnant, had a difficult labor, and required medical help to recover. After her successful recovery to health, Quinter returned home to continue her schooling; she is being raised by her older sister. Quinter has not given up on her education or her hopes of one day becoming a doctor.
